The best things I learned at TCEA

My DH and I attened TCEA this year. He presented. Alas, my proposal was not selected. I guess that my bit about the fun of using Skype with a traveling mascot was too old school. Oh well, Skoob will just keep traveling and I will just keep enjoying it.
OK...what did I learn? LiveBinder is a very cool site and I might see if my students can use this Web 2.0 application next year instead of saving things on the student drive. (that seems to confuse them and they cannot access it from home.) Tagzeto is very cool and I may use that in my Fancy Nancy Lesson. I used PhotoPeach to add a slide show of our Battle of the Books titles for next year on my website. Pretty proud that I learned to embed the slide show. Xtranormal is no longer free....drat.
I may take a poll of my fellow district librarians to see how many of them are aware of these apps and if they are not, I may write a proposal to present at the 2011-12 Library Harvest sponsored by Region XI...but only if presenters receive a free registration.

I have enjoyed participating in the 23 things. My goal this year is to develop "6 things" for my fifth grade students. With the help of my Instructional Technology Specialist, I plan to determine which 6 web 2.0 applications would be of the most benefit to my students. We will concentrate on one app each six weeks. In your opinion, which of the 23 things would be of the most benefit to my students? Flickr mashups using photos that they have taken themselves is definitely on my list.

I was surprised that some 23 things members had concerns about participating in Facebook. My biggest concern is that I have become seriously addicted! I have reconnected with friends from previous residences and times in my life.
On the "down" side, I do see a bit of "high school" attitudes in facebook with some people sniping at each other and whole "unfriending" issue. I am selective about who I accept as a friend and really haven't had many problems.

I am a serious facebook addict....how soon will there be a 12-step program for this? Anyway...I love facebook. I have reconnected with college and high school friends as well as former colleagues from other library positions. And I can connect with my friends, my family and the kids that my children grew up. It has made my world much smaller and I love it.

I have a flickr account for my small business, Quilted Treasures. I make custom quilts for clients and specialize in t-shirt quilts. My link is http:///www.flickr.com/photos/quiltedtreasures
I migrated here from a yahoo photo album and honestly think that the old yahoo album was easier to navigate. After a year or so, I am still not totally comfortable with the sets and collections concepts.
I have used flickr with my fourth grade students when searching for photos of Texas for a photostory project. You do need to be careful when using this with children as they may easily access some photos that may not be appropriate.
